Mortal Kombat already has several spin off and sequels, but this is the first time Mortal Kombat has crossover with another brand. For one, the game had to be made with a T-for-Teen rating, which led developers to tone down a bit of the series’ signature gore, and replace some characters’ fatalities with decidedly less gruesome “heroic brutalities.” This is the consequence of the join and a compromises to fit the mass appeal of the DC Universe.

As for the storyline explanation for the crossover, an unspecified cataclysmic event causes the Mortal Kombat and DC universes to begin merging. Each world sees itself as being attacked by the other, and their respective characters join the fight to repel the strange invaders. To help pen the tale, Midway has enlisted comic creators Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey. The two have worked together previously on a number of DC and Marvel comics, including Jonah Hex and Shana the She-Devil.
